Freshness + Quality = Better Beer

We at SoCo Homebrew started with a firm belief that Freshness and Quality ingredients are important when brewing your latest creation. This is why we designed our store and buying guidelines to get and keep for you the freshest highest quality ingredients that we could get our hands on.

Design:  When coming up with the design for the store we decided we wanted a hands on experience. Along with that we wanted to make sure that our storage for our product ensured that there were no issues with quality. During the construction of the grain room we made sure to use woods like cedar in most of the construction. Cedar has natural pest control elements that help reduce the chance of pests or weevils. We also included a dust management system within the mill table to make sure there were not any areas where pests could make a home.  Along with a rigorous cleaning schedule and temp/humidity controlled environment, we made a comfortable place for you to create great beers without creating a place for pests or stale product.

Storage: Most Products that are used to make beer are in fact perishable. That is why we at SoCo Homebrew decided that every product we carry will be in a properly controlled environment from the time it enters our store to the time you walk out with it. Even our entire warehouse is temperature and humidity controlled for proper storage of product. All yeast, hops and cheese products are stored at the suggested temperatures of the manufacturer. Along with the warehouse the rest of the store is held to the same level of control. At no time will you have to worry about any product sitting for long periods of time in hot and humid environments.

Ordering and stocking Product: Sometimes we find options to save money if we buy in large quantities. However we decided that we do not want to risk sitting on ingredients that might lose freshness over time. We are committed to ordering smaller amounts more frequently to assure the best quality ingredients. We are also always on the lookout for the next great hop or grain. You will find that our selection will rotate slightly over time to bring some new product into the store for everyone to try out. If we find that it is better we will keep getting it.

Recipes and product design: When it comes to our Recipes, we make sure that we are bringing you the best beers you can make. At SoCo Homebrew you will not be choosing from a list of Blind Recipes that are created and never tested. We are extremely active in brewing and testing the recipes that we design. Most of the time you can sample a taste before you purchase or brew it. We also test most of the equipment and hardware in store to make sure it all works to the standard we expect.

The little guy on the block

Welcome everyone. SoCo Homebrew started up out of what was looked at as a necessity. For a very long time Austin had only one homebrew shop in the north part of town. There were many people out there that thought about the idea of another shop. Many who lived in The South part of Austin wished they had a convenient resource to obtain homebrew supplies closer to where they lived.  In 2014 this dream finally became a reality. We introduce to you all, SoCo Homebrew. There were many factors that were considered when planning SoCo Homebrew. First was that we felt that what this town needed was a small personable shop that catered to the south Austin vibe that everyone in south Austin loves. We had no intention of “Going Big”. We wanted to make a small shop that brought a higher quality product along with a true personable experience. We also wanted to bring a real sense of community to the Austin Homebrewing and craft brew community.

In March the real work began. While considering the layout of the store there were some aspects that we wanted to be different than what Austin previously had. For instance, the grain room. We really wanted the SoCo Homebrew experience to be a hands on adventure. We made sure that not only were our grain bins accessible to the customer, that they also had a detailed description and the maltster of each grain was clearly listed. The grain room at SoCo Homebrew acts as a social environment where customers can discuss and share techniques and recipes. The Staff at SoCo Hombrew consists of avid homebrewers who enjoy helping others with making great beer.

Being a part of the south Austin community means that we needed and wanted to offer more than just homebrew supplies. South Austin is a true artisan community based off a healthy sustainable lifestyle. We wanted to make sure we were set up to be able to grow and support that community. At SoCo Homebrew we offer a large variety of other craft food and drink options. If its probiotic yogurt or vegetable fermentation or just cheese making, we want to make sure we have what everyone needs. Lately a new drink is sweeping the Austin scene. Kombucha is a probiotic lightly fermented drink that is good for you in so many ways. We wanted to offer what everyone needed to make this amazing health drink.

SoCo Homebrew was imagined, created and will be sustained to offer the Austin community all the options with the freshest ingredients to keep everyone’s craft and hobby growing. We hope you all continue to create and enjoy.

Thank You
